Danish design
An art, craft and design mecca located in the upwardly mobile district of Vesterbro, Designer Zoo is home to eight full-time designers. They work in house, creating original furniture, fresh jewellery, modern knitwear and stunning glass sculptures.
Now in its tenth year, Designer Zoo originally opened with three designers. Today it boasts eight full-time and up to 20 guest designers.
As well as being able to buy products direct from the designers, Designer Zoo offers handcrafted items from some of Denmark's finest artisans. It's the perfect way for a visitor to get a feeling for Danish design.
Founded by furniture designer Karsten Lauritsen, Designer Zoo offers visitors the unique chance of perusing the products while talking to the designers themselves. The artists occasionally work to commission to, so you can get involved in the process of creating these fine pieces of art.
Be sure to check out the 'Bønnebordet' (Bean Table), one of Designer Zoo's most popular items. A bean-shaped side table available in a variety of colours and leg lengths, it encapsulates the elegant simplicity of Danish design and has been a top seller for a number of years.
In keeping with the artistic theme, Designer Zoo also functions as a gallery and hosts a number of exhibitions by local and regional artists each year. Art and education societies can also get in touch about out-of-hours talks and exhibitions by the designers.
