International brands
Gucci is one of the most recognizable and desirable luxury brands in the world, and you can find one of its indulgent and decadent stores on Ostergade (part of Strøget shopping street) in central Copenhagen.
Guccio Gucci, the pioneer of the brand, was born in 1881, the son of a craftsman. At first, Gucci was a saddler and leather goods shop in Florence in Italy. He sold leather bags to horsemen in the 20's, and progressed to luxury luggage as his clients gradually moved away from horses to motorized vehicles. The first Gucci shop was opened in Rome in 1938.
In 1947, as a way to get around the limitations on materials caused by the war, Gucci's designers developed the bamboo-handled bag, which became an instant success and still endures today. In the 50's, Gucci returned to his roots and introduced various equestrian themes, including the now famous saddle girth device.
Gucci died in 1953, but his family was able to successfully take over the business and launch it globally, opening stores in Paris, Beverly Hills, London and Tokyo. In the 1960s, Gucci hit a cultural nerve and was seen adorning the likes of Grace Kelly, Peter Sellers, Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy. The famous GG logo was also conceived during this period.
While Gucci has had some management and familial problems, it is now firmly established as one of the greatest luxury brands in the world, and in fact was voted so in 2007, with a full range of accessories, footwear, watches, perfumes... in fact, anything you can think of!
Whichever Gucci shop you visit around the world, you can be sure that you'll be shopping in an elegant, luxurious location, and the Gucci Store on Ostergade in Copenhagen is no different.
